Past Presidents

ShamaShama Mesiwala: Shama, a senior judicial attorney for California’s 3rd District Court of Appeal, became the Sacramento Superior Court commissioner as of February 2017. She is also an adjunct professor at UC Davis School of Law, teaching Appellate Advocacy.  Shama has been in our region since 1995 when she came to Davis to begin law school, and she lives in Davis with her spouse and son. Shama is a co-founder of SABA of Sacramento.

AmarAmar Shergill: Amar is a trial attorney with The Shergill Law Firm, practicing exclusively in personal injury and wrongful death. He is a member of the Capitol City Trial Lawyers Association and Consumer Attorneys of California. Amar has lived in the Sacramento area since 1996, and he enjoys participating in Cub Scouts and organized soccer with his children. Amar is committed to increasing the participation of South Asian attorneys in social, legal and political organizations.

NitiNiti Gupta: Niti currently practices law at Alvarenga & Clark Law Firm in San Bernadino, where she is trial counsel for the Juvenile Dependency Division. Niti formerly worked as a Deputy Public Defender in Sacramento County, where she began her legal career in 2007. She started out practicing in the adult misdemeanor unit where she secured a number of trial victories for her clients, then practiced in the juvenile division for three years, and then in the adult felony unit. She received her law degree from Santa Clara University. Niti is a co-founder of SABA of Sacramento.

NiravNirav Desai: Nirav is an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, in Sacramento. Nirav previously served as a judicial law clerk to a Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Nirav is a past board member and scholarship chairperson of the ABAS Law Foundation. Nirav earned his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in 2004, and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2000.

Tej Grewal: Tej is a founding partner of Dhillon & Grewal Law. During his previous positions, Tej has served as insurance defense counsel in complex cases involving personal injuries and damages to real property.  Mr. Grewal received his J.D. from Pacific McGeorge School of Law.


Brad Coutinho: Brad currently serves as tax counsel at the California Franchise Tax Board. Brad earned his law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in 2012, and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 2007.


Vishali Singal: Vishali serves as a senior staff attorney for the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, which manages the largest public pension fund in the United States.  She is a graduate of UC Berkeley and UC Hastings College of the Law.  In her spare time, Vishali enjoys volunteering, including serving as a mentor in the McClatchy Law Academy.


Hiren Patel: Hiren is Chief Counsel at California Department of Developmental Services. He earned his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law and his bachelor’s degree from U.C. Davis. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his family.
