Day of Seva (August 5, 2017)

On Saturday, August 5th, SABA Sacramento partnered with the Sikh coalition and the Land Park Volunteer Corps in a day of landscaping at William Land Park. The event was part of the Sikh Coalition’s Day of Seva (selfless community service) to remember the victims of the Oak Creek mass shooting that took place in Wisconsin in 2012.

SABA hosted its 10th Anniversary Reception at the California Court of Appeal on June 29, 2017. The event honored our co-founder, Shama Mesiwala, and her recent appointment as Sacramento Superior Court Commissioner. Magistrate Judge Alka Sagar served as keynote speaker and delivered an inspirational and poignant speech.

SABA/ABAS Happy Hour (April 20, 2017)

On Thursday, April 20, 2017 members from the South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento (SABA Sacramento) and the Asian Bar Association of Sacramento (ABAS) had a joint happy hour at Oak Park Brewing Company.

SABA’s Networking Event (February 22, 2017)

SABA Sacramento kicked off the new year with a networking event on February 22, 2017. The event was held at Cafeteria 15L and was well attended with a mix of new members and old friends.

My Sister’s House Run for a Safe Haven (Saturday, October 22, 2016)

On October 22, 2016, SABA of Sacramento members participated in a 5K run to support My Sister’s House, a local domestic violence shelter that addresses the needs of women and children impacted by domestic violence in the Central Valley’s diverse Asian and Pacific Islander community.

SABA’s 9th Annual Diversity Law Student Reception (Saturday, September 17, 2016)

The South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of Sacramento hosted its 9th Annual Diversity Reception at Shama Mesiwala’s home in Davis on September 17, 2016. The reception, attended by over 160 people, provided the opportunity for law students from all backgrounds to mingle over Indian appetizers and desserts with our local judges and attorneys in a relaxed backyard setting.

On August 13, 2016, the Sacramento Sikh Coalition, joined by SABA Sacramento, coordinating with sangats from across the country, led a National Day of Seva (selfless community service) to remember and honor the victims and survivors of the Oak Creek and Orlando tragedies.

SABA’s 7th Anniversary Reception (March 29, 2016)

On March 29, 2016, SABA Sacramento celebrated its 7th anniversary. Our keynote speaker was UC Davis Law Professor, Madhavi Sunder. Professor Sunder is a leading scholar of law and culture and has been a Visiting Professor of Law at the Yale Law School, the University of Chicago Law School and Cornell Law School. We were extremely honored and excited that Professor Sunder delivered the keynote address.

The Unity Bar celebrated its 25th anniversary dinner at the Doubletree Hotel. Retired California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno was the keynote speaker and Justice Elena Duarte was the master of ceremonies for the evening. SABA awarded its community service award to Sonia Fernandes and its scholarship to Tara Shabahang. The funds for the scholarship were generously donated by the law firm of Wilke Fleury.

The South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of Sacramento hosted its fifth annual diversity reception for students from UC Davis, Pacific McGeorge, and Lincoln law schools at Shama Mesiwala’s home in Davis on Saturday, September 29, 2012. The reception, attended by over 100 people, provided the opportunity for law students from all backgrounds to mingle over Indian appetizers and desserts with our local judges and attorneys in a relaxed backyard setting.

SABA was honored by the attendance of Presiding Justice Vance Raye, Justice Ron Robie, Justice Andrea Hoch, and Justice Art Scotland from the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District; Judge Raoul Thorbourne, Judge Russell Hom, Judge Helena Gweon, and Judge Thadd Blizzard, from the Sacramento County Superior Court; Judge Dave Rosenberg and Daniel Maguire from the Yolo County Superior Court; and Dean Francis J. Mootz from Pacific McGeorge School of Law.

SABA’s 4th Anniversary Reception (March 15, 2012)

SABA celebrated its fourth anniversary at Casa Garden restaurant with a dinner on March 15, 2012. The event featured a keynote address by Judge Morrison England of the United States District Court, Eastern District of California, about his recent trip to India sponsored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Judge England, along with retired Presiding Justice Art Scotland of the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, served as bartenders for the event, donating all tips received to the Sacramento Children’s Home.

Two of SABA’s law students, Brad Coutinho from McGeorge and Negin Yazdani from UC Davis, spoke eloquently about what SABA has meant to them for the last three years. And Nirav Desai, incoming SABA president, thanked Niti Gupta for her four years on the SABA board, including serving as SABA’s most recent president.

In addition to Judge England and Justice Scotland, SABA was honored by the presence of Judge Kimberly Mueller and Magistrate Judge Edmund Brennan from the United States District Court, Eastern District of California, Justice Harry Hull and Elena Duarte from the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, and Judge Emily Vasquez and Judge Raoul Thorbourne from the Sacramento Superior Court.

For the fourth year in a row, SABA participated in the annual Unity Bar Dinner, which celebrates the diversity of the Sacramento legal community. SABA board member Gaurav Kalra presented a community service award to Nilda Valmores, the executive Director of My Sister’s House, a shelter addressing the unique needs of women and children impacted by domestic violence in the Central Valley’s highly diverse Asian and Pacific Islander community. SABA presented scholarships to UC Davis law student Negin Yazdani and Amreet Gill. The funds for the scholarship were generously donated by the Unity Bar, the law firm of Wilke Fleury, and US District Court Judge Jay Gandhi.

SABA of Sacramento celebrated its third anniversary at Downey Brand LLP with over 100 friends and guests. Headlining the evening was keynote speaker US District Court Magistrate Judge Jay Gandhi, the first South Asian federal magistrate judge in the country. Judge Gandhi spoke eloquently about his father’s passage from Punjab, India to the peach orchards of Yuba City and his own journey to the bench as the son of immigrants.

SABA, in conjunction with McGeorge’s Middle Eastern and South Asian Association (MESAA) hosted a career panel at McGeorge School of Law consisting of local Sacramento attorneys, solo practioner, Nilesh Choudhary, Sacramento County Deputy Public Defender, Niti Gupta, Hanson Bridgett associate, Renju Jacob, and McGeorge professor, Omar Dajani. The event was attended by approximately 20 McGeorge law school students who received valuable advice from the panel’s experiences in the legal profession.

SABA Mentorship Mixer (April 19, 2010)

SABA of Sacramento hosted its first Mentorship Mixer at Kathmandu Kitchen in Sacramento. The event was aimed at building mentor-mentee relationships between attorneys in Sacramento and students from King Hall and McGeorge Schools of Law. During two 30-minute sessions, students had the opportunity to have one-on-one discussions with their mentor attorneys. The end of the event offered the students and attorneys the opportunity to casually mingle with each other.
